NIMBO Terrain-RGB

← All datasets

Overview

Terrain-RGB encoded elevation tiles for 3D visualization, assembled from identified international and national sources on continental surfaces. DTM or DSM nature and accuracy depend on the sources; served pixel spacing varies with zoom and latitude.

Decode altitude values for terrain meshes and 3D relief.

Service: Available. Check coverage for your area. Access and usage rights depend on your plan.

Resolution

Varies with zoom and latitude

Source grids

Approximately 1–30 m in documented examples

Documented upstream examples span 1–30 m. This is not a validated NIMBO-wide resolution range; source editions and resampling require confirmation.

  • RGE ALTI France 1–5 m

Upstream products offer 1 m and 5 m grids. The NIMBO-integrated edition and resampling are not verified.

  • SwissAltiRegio Switzerland and surrounding region 10 m

Upstream 10 m grid. The exact NIMBO source footprint and edition are not verified.

  • Copernicus GLO-30 (ESA) Global land Approximately 30 m

Nominal 30 m DSM, with a 1 arc-second geographic grid; spacing varies with latitude. This does not certify the delivered NIMBO grid.

Served pixel spacing

Variable with zoom and latitude · EPSG:3857

Ground spacing of served pixels varies with zoom and latitude. Tile dimensions and zoom limits are listed under Technical services; they do not establish native source resolution or accuracy.

View tile sizes, zooms and encoding

Native source resolution, served pixel spacing, encoding step and vertical accuracy are different properties. Vertical accuracy depends on the source. Vertical references, resampling and source-specific accuracy measurements have not been confirmed. Hydrological and other demanding analytical uses require corresponding validation.

Terrain-RGB represents encoded heights in 0.1 m steps. This is not a 0.1 m vertical-accuracy guarantee.

Method and interpretation

Elevation can represent a digital terrain model (DTM) or a digital surface model (DSM), depending on the source. Some source heights can include surface features rather than bare ground. Accuracy depends on the source; a common harmonization process has not been confirmed.

For Terrain-RGB, each source is converted to RGB DEM, then reprojected and integrated in a TMS tiling system in EPSG:3857. The WebP encoding is lossless. The published endpoint uses the documented XYZ connection settings. Resampling, zoom generation and final vertical accuracy have not been confirmed.

Terrain-RGB and its derived relief products concern continental surfaces. Exact footprint boundaries and NoData areas have not been confirmed; a continental extent is not proof of a populated tile at every location.

    Service checks and limitations

    Checked:

TileJSON advertises zooms 0–16. Paris returned data through zoom 14 and HTTP 204 at 15–16; Stockholm returned data through 16. Non-empty samples were 512 × 512 WebP; a no-data ocean response was a transparent 256 × 256 PNG. Use the extensionless URL.

No direct download is published here. See Files and redistribution for contractual delivery.

Limitations

  • Source grids vary. The documented upstream examples span approximately 1–30 m, but their integration, version and resampling do not establish one certified NIMBO resolution or vertical accuracy.
  • The current TileJSON advertises zooms 0–16. Higher detail is area-dependent: Paris returned no content at zooms 15–16, while Stockholm returned elevation tiles. Zoom 17 returned an invalid-zoom error.
  • HTTP 200 can contain a transparent no-data tile. The audit sampled locations and did not establish an exhaustive footprint or a common vertical datum.
  • Source datasets retain their own licensing and attribution requirements. See the product guide.
